From Workhouse to Workspace: The Story of Trinity Road

Watermoor Point ·

Trinity Road Cirencester is home to one of the town’s most historic buildings. Now known as the Council Offices, the site has served the community for nearly two centuries and continues to evolve today.

A Victorian Beginning

The site was originally built in 1837 as the Cirencester Union Workhouse. Like many workhouses of the time, it was designed to provide basic shelter and care for the poorest members of society under the Victorian Poor Law system.

The Move into Healthcare

By the early 20th century, workhouses across the country began to change purpose. In 1930, Gloucestershire County Council took control of the site. It later became a Public Assistance Institution.

When the NHS formed in 1948, the building became Watermoor Hospital. It served the local community for many years. Many people in Cirencester still remember visiting patients there.

Becoming Council Offices

Watermoor Hospital closed in the late 1970s. In 1978, Cotswold District Council purchased the site. After redevelopment, the building reopened in 1981 as the Council Offices on Trinity Road. Over the years, Trinity Road Cirencester has adapted to meet the changing needs of the local community.

The building kept much of its original character. This blend of history and modern use gives the site its unique feel. A Grade II listed lock-up still stands in the grounds and reflects the site’s long civic role.

A New Chapter with Watermoor Point

Changes in working patterns created new opportunities for the building. Through a partnership with Watermoor Point, unused office space now supports local businesses.

The site offers flexible offices and co-working space. Council services continue to operate alongside a growing business community.

A Building That Continues to Evolve

Trinity Road has adapted many times over the years. It has served as a workhouse, a hospital, and council offices. Today, Trinity Road Cirencester supports modern businesses while preserving its rich history.

At Watermoor Point, we are proud to manage this next chapter.
