Let’s Be Honest: Sustainability is Everywhere: What “Zero to Landfill” Actually Means for Us
Watermoor Point ·
We see sustainability everywhere, on every corporate website and in every mission statement. Too often, it functions as a hollow buzzword. However, real environmental progress happens at the ground level. It isn’t about catchy slogans; it’s about what we do with the waste in our bins.
At Watermoor Point, we have moved beyond the buzzwords. We have committed to a Zero to Landfill policy. Here is why this shift matters for our members, our town, and the wider Cotswolds.
The Problem with the “Old Way”
For decades, the standard was simple, throw waste in a bin and send it to a landfill. Unfortunately, landfills are environmental relics. When waste rots in those massive heaps without oxygen, it creates methane. This greenhouse gas is roughly 28 times more potent than co2. Consequently, UK Government guidelines now state that landfilling should always be the last resort.
Beyond the air we breathe, landfills take up huge amounts of land and pose a constant risk to local groundwater. Simply put, “out of sight, out of mind” isn’t a strategy anymore.
Our Zero to Landfill Cirencester Process
We have replaced the old dump it model with a smarter, circular hierarchy. At Watermoor Point, 100% of the waste generated on-site is diverted from landfills. Here is the lifecycle of a piece of waste at our site:
- Step 1: Recovery. High-value materials paper, plastics, and metals are sorted and returned to the economy to be reused.
- Step 2: Energy from Waste. What about the stuff that can’t be recycled? Instead of going into a hole in the ground, it’s sent to specialised facilities. There, it’s combusted under strict controls to generate electricity and heat.
Why Sustainable Business Matters for Gloucestershire
As a major employment hub in Cirencester, we know our footprint affects the entire Cotswold region. Therefore, we don’t want sustainability to be a future ambition; we want it to be the current standard.
Because we repurpose or convert every scrap of office refuse into power, our members can focus entirely on their work. You can operate here with the confidence that your workspace actually aligns with your values. In short, this Zero to Landfill milestone is just one step on our path to a truly circular economy.
At Watermoor Point, we aren’t just talking about change; we are doing our bit to power it. Would you like to join us? View our available office and warehouse spaces here.
